CMS Introduces 4 New G-Codes for 2017

NEW RESOURCE: Download Kinnser's G-codes tip sheet to learn more about the new codes and how to use them correctly.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued CR 9736 with an effective date of January 1, 2017. This policy change retires two existing G-codes and introduces four new ones to accommodate new payment changes, including those related to Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.

These G-code changes were not addressed in the body of the 2017 Home Health Final Rule.

G0163 and G0164 are being retired effective January 1, 2017. They are being replaced by four new codes:

  1. G0493 will reflect the skilled services of an RN for the observation and assessment of the patient’s condition.

  2. G0494 will reflect the skilled services of an LPN for observation and assessment of the patient’s condition.

  3. G0495 will reflect the skilled services of an RN in the training and education of a patient or family member.

  4. G0496 will reflect the skilled services of an LPN in the training and education of a patient or family member.

Billing and clinical teams should be made aware of these pending changes as soon as possible.
