ICD-10: Why Productivity Matters Now, More than Ever

by Chip Schneider

There aren’t many things that healthcare consultants agree on, but here’s one: ICD-10 is going to take a big bite out of your productivity.  And there’s hard evidence to back up this opinion.

In 2013, two large and influential organizations in healthcare IT—HIMSS (the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) and WEDI (the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange)—conducted an ICD-10 pilot program to study the productivity and accuracy of experienced, trained coders working in ICD-10. Their test group consisted of twenty-four ICD-10-trained, AHIMA-certified coders. Here’s what they found:

  • Productivity: The test group averaged two medical records per hour, compared to four per hour under ICD-9. That translates to a 50% decline in productivity.
  • Accuracy: The group’s overall accuracy was only 63%!

Combined, these reductions in productivity and accuracy could be very serious. Even though this test was conducted two years ago, the coding system is still the same. Once again, the test group consisted of ICD-10-trained, certified coders.

October 1 is right around the corner. With 5 times as many diagnostic codes to choose from, day-to-day operations will be tested like never before.  Ensuring your agency is maximizing productivity will minimize the impacts of ICD-10 on your cash flow. That’s why Kinnser Software has assembled The ICD-10 Toolkit. This complimentary resource center contains helpful webinars, tip sheets and checklists to help you through the initial transition and perform successful coding in the months to come. Educational resources will be continually added to keep you armed with the latest ICD-10 information.

Keep Calm, and Code On!!
